Traveling to Tibet as a woman sounds intimidating. You need a permit just to enter. You must have a guide by law. The altitude is real. And if you are thinking about going alone, you are probably wondering if it is actually safe, comfortable, or even possible.
It is. And you do not have to figure it out by yourself.
Our Tibet women-only tours are small group trips designed for female travelers who want the adventure without the uncertainty. You join a group of like-minded women, travel with an experienced local Tibetan guide, and let us handle the permits, hotels, oxygen, and logistics.
In this guide, you will find our 2026 dates, prices, and the real story of Josie, a travel YouTuber who visited Tibet with Experience Tibet and documented the entire journey.
Why women choose Tibet women-only tours
Tibet is not a place where you can just book a flight and explore solo. Foreign travelers must travel with a licensed guide. The paperwork is complicated. The altitude is unpredictable. And for many women, the idea of joining a mixed group or traveling alone in a remote region feels like too much.
That is exactly why our women-only small groups work.
You get the structure of a guided tour with the comfort of a female-only group. No need to negotiate with a male-dominated group pace. No awkward hotel rooming situations. No pressure to prove yourself on long driving days or monastery stairs.
Instead, you get:
- A small group of 4 to 13 women
- A local Tibetan guide who knows the region personally
- All Tibet travel permits handled for you
- Oxygen support and altitude monitoring
- Hotels selected for safety, cleanliness, and location
- A pace that leaves room for rest, photos, and tea breaks
The women who join these trips are usually solo travelers, friends traveling together, or mothers and daughters looking for something beyond the usual vacation. Some have never been above 3,000 meters. Others have trekked in Nepal or Peru. The group dynamic makes it work for everyone.
Josie’s real story: a woman traveling Tibet with Experience Tibet

Josie is a travel YouTuber from Australia. Before her trip to Tibet, she had never been anywhere at high altitude. She was nervous. She did not know what to expect. But she knew it would probably be the trip of a lifetime.
Her video, “Inside China’s Most Controversial Region,” documents the entire experience with Experience Tibet.
Here is what she actually said about the trip:
“Not only do we have to get a permit to come here, but we can’t be alone by ourselves. We have to have a guide with us at all times.”
“I had this gifted by Experience Tibet and I couldn’t have done it without them because obviously they organized our permits to even be here. They’ve gotten us into all of these things and we have a really cool six days ahead of us.”
“They provided us with oxygen masks and oxygen tanks when Michael’s been sick with the altitude.”
Josie traveled with her partner Michael, but her experience reflects exactly what a woman traveling to Tibet needs to know. The region requires a guide. The altitude can hit hard. And having a team that brings oxygen, checks on you, and handles the logistics makes the difference between a stressful trip and a transformative one.
You can watch Josie’s full video here:
(The tour was gifted to Josie by Experience Tibet in exchange for the video. No approval was required on the final content, and her opinions are her own.)

What makes our Tibet women-only tours different

There are plenty of tour companies that run trips to Tibet. Few of them are run by a team that actually lives and works there. Even fewer design trips specifically for women.
Here is what we do differently.
Local Tibetan guides
Our guides are Tibetan. They grew up with the altitude, the culture, and the landscape. They know how to read the signs of altitude sickness before you do. They also know which tea houses serve the best sweet tea, which monastery corners are worth the climb, and how to explain sky burial without making it sound like a tourist attraction.
Permits handled for you
Every foreign traveler needs a Tibet Travel Permit. Depending on your route, you may also need an Alien’s Travel Permit or a Military Permit. We apply for these on your behalf. You just send us your passport and Chinese visa details.
Oxygen and altitude support
Altitude sickness is the biggest concern for most travelers, especially women who may be traveling without a partner or friend. We provide oxygen bottles in the vehicle and medical-grade oxygen canisters for higher destinations like Everest Base Camp. Your guide monitors the group and adjusts the pace.
Hotels chosen for comfort and safety
We use 3 to 4-star hotels in Lhasa and Shigatse whenever possible. Near Everest Base Camp, accommodation is simpler, but we choose the best available options. For women-only groups, we pay extra attention to rooming arrangements, bathroom cleanliness, and safe locations.
A pace that respects your body
We do not rush from monastery to monastery just to tick boxes. Our itineraries include acclimatization time in Lhasa, rest breaks, and optional activities. If you need to skip a climb or take a slower walk, the group supports it.

For the spiritual seeker: 15-Day Mt. Kailash Trekking Tour

How to book a Tibet women-only tour in 2026

Booking a women-only tour to Tibet is simple, but it requires a bit more lead time than a typical trip because of the permit process.
Step 1: Choose your tour and month
Pick the itinerary and the month that works for you. If you do not see an exact date, contact us. We can often match you with a forming women-only group or arrange a private women-only departure.
Step 2: Send your documents
We need a copy of your passport and your Chinese visa to apply for the Tibet Travel Permit. We recommend starting this process at least 15 to 20 days before your planned arrival.
Step 3: Confirm your booking
Once your permit application is submitted, we confirm your tour, send you the final itinerary, and provide a packing list, altitude preparation tips, and a pre-trip briefing.
Step 4: Arrive in Lhasa and acclimatize
Your guide meets you at the airport or train station. The first two days in Lhasa are intentionally relaxed to help your body adjust before any higher driving or trekking.

Frequently asked questions about Tibet women-only tours
Is it safe for women to travel to Tibet alone?
Yes, Tibet is generally safe for women travelers. The main challenges are altitude and logistics, not crime or harassment. Traveling in a women-only small group with a local guide removes most of the uncertainty.
Do I need a guide by law?
Yes. All foreign travelers must be accompanied by a licensed guide in Tibet. You cannot travel independently. This is why joining an organized tour is not optional, it is required.
What if I get altitude sickness?
Altitude sickness is common, especially in the first 48 hours. Our guides monitor symptoms, provide oxygen, and adjust the pace. In serious cases, the solution is descent, and our team is trained to handle it.
Can I join if I have never traveled solo?
Absolutely. Many women on our trips are first-time solo travelers. The group format means you are never alone unless you want to be.
What should I pack?
Layers. Even in summer, mornings and evenings are cold. Bring a warm jacket, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, lip balm, a hat, and a reusable water bottle. We send a full packing list after booking.
Are the tours only for women?
Yes, the women-only departures are exclusively for female travelers. If you prefer a mixed group or a private tour, we offer those too.
What is included in the price?
Our small group prices typically include accommodation, breakfast, transportation, guide services, entrance fees, Tibet travel permits, oxygen support, and some meals. International flights, Chinese visa fees, and personal expenses are not included.
How far in advance should I book?
At least 4 to 6 weeks in advance, and ideally 2 to 3 months for peak season or Kailash tours. Permit processing takes 15 to 20 days, and popular months fill up.
Ready to join our Tibet women-only tours?
Tibet is not an easy destination. It is high, remote, and tightly regulated. But that is exactly why it rewards the women who go there with the right support.
You do not need to be an extreme athlete. You do not need to speak Tibetan. You do not need to organize permits or negotiate with drivers. You just need curiosity, a reasonable fitness level, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.
Our Tibet women-only tours give you the structure, safety, and sisterhood to make it happen.
